GRACE BIBLE CHURCH

DISCIPLESHIP

INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE

Discipleship at Grace Bible Church is a means of assisting the saints to “grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18), and “equipping the saints for the work of ministry” (Ephesians 4:12).

Discipleship is more training than teaching.  To demonstrate the difference between the two, think about how you learned to tie your shoes.  Did you listen to a lecture or read a book?  No, someone showed you how to tie your shoes.  While teaching (primarily expository preaching through books of the Bible) is important, so is training in Discipleship groups.  The Discipleship leader takes students through a curriculum designed to show students how to develop the disciplines of the Christian life.  Those disciplines include knowing God's Word, having a prayer life, being a functioning member of the body of Christ, and sharing ones faith with non-believers.

STUDY GROUPS

These materials are designed to be used in small groups.  Small groups may be as small as two persons, although in most cases they will number from three to six.  Groups larger than this will not be able to enjoy the level of intimacy associated with small group ministry, and are therefore not advisable.

There is definitely benefit to remaining with the same group for an extended period of time.  Groups may change personnel from time to time however as people come and go.

USING THESE MATERIALS

Discipleship in our church is based on a curriculum designed to be gone through in a specific order, each building on what has gone before.  The curriculum begins with The Gospel, since the most important first step is to be sure everyone in that group is born again and understands that the Gospel is the foundation for everything that follows.

Most lessons to take at least two weeks to get through.  Some may take longer.  Groups should not rush to get through the material before the material gets through them; nor should the pace be so slow that context is lost.

There is also a men’s study (100-M) and a women’s study (100-W).  These are important studies that all groups are strongly encouraged to go through.  The men’s study is based on an essay by John Piper entitled, “A Vision Of Biblical Complementarity: Manhood and Womanhood Defined According to the Bible.”  The women’s study is based on a book entitled “Women’s Ministry in the Local Church,” by J. Ligon Duncan & Susan Hunt.
